Feeling HOT HOT HOT!!!
July 29th, 2009 is going down in the history books as Seattle's hottest day ever recorded. The official temp got to 103 degrees. And I am happy to say we all survived. If you are wondering if Edmonds saw three digits, then let me show you. The girls and I went to Trader Joes. As you can see from their sign it hit three digits while we were there. The first picture was taken at 2:16 and the second one was less than 15 minutes later. My car dashboard read 100 too. During the 5 o'clock news the bug in the corner read 102. And even though the inside house temperature (not including the attic) never registered with 3 digits we came quite close. Here's the girls' room. the outdoor reading doesn't really work, its sensor is tucked away behind the dresser, must not have been in sun like the rest of their room was. We usually use that bottom number as the temp for their room. And the hallway got up to 97 but I was busy cooking, I mean food was cooking in the kitchen. I was "cooking" too, so I couldn't get a picture until later when it dropped down to 95.
You may be asking how a family survives in a house with no AC with temps like this. Luckily the humidity is much lower than in the midwest, which we are accustomed to, but that doesn't make it much better. We went grocery shopping to get into some air conditioning. But for the most part we stayed home. Our downstairs stayed cooler, but not much. I know at one point it was over 84 degrees. I made a pool for the girls to cool off in. I took the gift wrapping box and filled it with water. Worked pretty good, I thought. As you can see in the video Khalila was having fun. I occasionally sprayed the hose straight up in the air for a nice cold rain. Khalila thought that was fun and started doing it. That lasted a few minutes until Khalila had the hose on full blast and then, when not paying attention, sprayed me. Therefore the hose was put away. I wasn't too upset. I was cooled off for quite awhile until my dress dried. As for Kelbi, we tried to spray her with the hose but it didn't work. She kept her distance.
We had a bizarre thing happen that afternoon. I had opened the sliding glass door downstairs. The screen door is broke, but we usually don't mind the few house flies that come in. But that day we were swarmed by these strange half bee half fly looking insects. I googled and found that they might be hover flies, which even though they look like bees are harmless. I wasn't for sure that they were hover flies and even if they were, I had like 20 of them in my family room. Luckily they were pretty easy to kill as they didn't move much, even when I was swatting at one right next to another. I left my camera downstairs for a few minutes. I found this on the card today when I downloaded the pictures for this blog. I'm pretty sure this is a self-portrait.
We ended the hottest day ever by going to a co-worker's house of Jabran who has an in ground swimming pool. That had to be the best way to end that day. Khalila did great swimming on her own. The shallow end was shallow enough that she could touch. But she liked her wings on as well. Isabel was watching Khalila go under the water and started trying to as well, even holding her nose. Jabran went off the diving board and Isabel then got every interested in it herself. This is as close as we let her get to using it. Here's the family as the sunsets and it finally starts to cool off.
